Vanderbilt Motor Parkway
The Vanderbilt Motor Parkway was the only straight route from Manhattan to Lake Ronkonkoma in the early 1900's.
It was one of the first concrete roadways in America, and it was the first roadway ever to use bridges and overpasses
to eliminate intersections. Click here for an excellent in-depth history of the parkway:

Petit Trianon
At the end of the Vanderbilt Motor parkway was the elegant Petit Trianon. William K. Vanderbilt Jr. built the inn for his guests to rest after the long road trip from Manhattan. He sent an architect, John Russell Pope, to France to eyeball the original Petit Trianon Chateau and have him incorporate it into his design. The Petit Trianon burned to the ground in 1957.
